April 27, 2008 Orthodox Easter

Easter is a very popular holiday in Russia in commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus.

Easter has no fixed date. It is held on the first Sunday after the date of the first full moon that occurs on or after March 21. In 2006, it is on the 23rd of April.

On eve of Easter people cook special dishes, they bake rich Easter cakes, make Easter cottage cheese cakes and paint eggs. Usually eggs are painted and then are brought to the church to consecrate. Egg is the main paschal symbol of resurrection as and egg brings new essence. In different regions Paschal egg has own ornament and manner of drawing.

There is an old Russian Easter tradition - on this day people greet each other with three times kisses and with words "Christ arise!" At paschal greeting and salutation believers give each other red eggs.

This custom comes from old times. When Maria Magdalene came to emperor Tiberius, she brought him as a gift a red egg with salutation "Christ has arisen!" Red color is the color of blood on the cross that Christ shed for atonement sins of the world.

May 1, 2008 Spring and Labour Day

Originally the Day of International Solidarity of Workers, it became just a holiday of Spring and Labour.

Throughout its history, May Day has traditionally been a joyous celebration of spring, femininity, fertility and the coming summer.

On some years, it occurs on or close to with Russian Orthodox Easter, so some people celebrate in church while some attend customary demonstrations.

Communistic Party of Russia organizes demonstrations or meetings on the 1th of May. But for most people these days are just an extra holiday without any political meaning. Since, it is always a day off, it's very convenient for people working at their dachas. They use the extra holiday to plant vegetables and to clean their dachas after winter. So most Russians agree with the new name for this holiday: "Day of Spring and Labour".

The first day of May is celebrated in many parts of the world. It is believed it evolved from ancient agricultural and fertility rites of spring.

Today, May Day is celebrated all over Europe and in many countries and in some parts of the United States.

May 9, 2008 The Victory Day

Victory Day over German Nazism in the WW2 has ageless historical value. This spring day went down in the chronicle of the USSR as the end of the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945), the most dramatic war in Russian history.

Russia celebrates Victory Day on May 9 to commemorate the millions fallen in World War II. Flowers and wreaths are laid on wartime graves on this day, and veterans come out into the streets wearing their military orders and medals.

Only a few ex-servicemen, who took part in World War II, are alive now. They meet together on 9th of May, remembering their companions-in-arms, who had gone now. Traditional ceremony includes putting flowers to cenotaph, and the minute of silence, when we should think about the fallen (it's a kind of non-religious prayer).
